Your blogs and article pages are the new homepage. Most new website owners jump in on things that will not move their business forward, and one of the largest mistakes they make is spending time on their homepage. It may be a source of pride, but for most, it isn’t a valuable use of time.
Rather than spending hours making sure your homepage is exactly what you want, a little time and effort spent elsewhere can create an automated income stream from your SEO traffic.
Keep in mind, it’s not an autoresponder. These automate income from email opt-ins. These changes will automate income while a user stays engaged on your site.
Let’s start at the beginning. There are two ways that you land on a website:
Direct
To go direct, Web browsers just type http://www.DigitalMarketer.com in the URL box. That’s great, but it’s also an indication that the person sitting at their computer is already familiar with a site.
Instead, you want to automate users who find your site because they are searching for your solution.
A user shows up on a search engine and types a topic they are interested in. Your homepage will rarely show up in the top search results unless they are already looking for you.
Referral
Instead, Google, Bing and other content aggregators refer people directly to an article page intended to answer the reader’s question. This increases the importance of making sure that ever page a user can land on offers an adequate opportunity to engage with your business.
Your site may have great ranking and answer the user’s question, but a viable part of your business can be built by learning how to capture and convert these readers.
Here are the critical things to make sure you capitalize on the new source of traffic:
Generate multiple articles on the same topic focused on “long tail” keywords. A “long tail” keyword means that you know more about what the reader is searching for.
As an example, if a user that types “gardening” into a search engine, they could be looking for anything. These terms may generate a higher volume of visits, but since the search engine doesn’t really know what the user intends to find, readers come and go from the top five websites.
Instead, write five articles that would respond to “long tail” searches like:
• What plants grow well in the northeast
• How to start a backyard garden
• Most common vegetables for gardening
• How gardening saves you $2,000 a year
• Basic tools needed for gardening
Users can easily identify your content as answering their question. A natural boost in SEO occurs because you identify something specific. This helps you get that ever-so-precious initial click.
Then, make sure you have a compelling offer to capture the reader when they land on your site. Do so with these three steps:
1. Have three opportunities for a reader to opt-in. Each opportunity offers a simple lead magnet, such as a free report, in exchange for their email address. The first two opt-in placements that most people utilize correctly are at the top, right-hand side of the page, and a pop-up, commonly created with Pop-Up Dominator. However, most people miss the most obvious capture point: the footer of every single article.
We suggest using Opt-in Skin for this. After someone reads your article, make it convenient for them to opt-in. Otherwise, they’ll have to scroll back up to the top of the page. We’ve seen opt-in rates increase by over 40% when adding this footer feature.
2. Have related articles within reach of the end of the article. You may want to try using the WordPress Related Posts Thumbnails for this. They help make it easy for someone to continue to engage with your site and gain another opportunity to capture the reader.
3. Once you have the reader’s attention, and they are either on your list or they continue browsing the site, you can convert them to a buyer.
Present a related product solution. Every one of your products should have a blog post. This allows you to have it show up in the related articles. You can control the categories and tags so that “gardening” products show up in the related posts for gardening articles.
You may also do this with a custom editor’s note at the bottom of each post. Think of it as a 50-word summary that tells the reader they can learn more about a solution to the specific problem by clicking over to your sales page.
These simple changes should take no more than three hours to complete, and can make a big difference toward automating the revenue generated from your free content.
